In 1862, on the 5th of May after the Mexican-American war, the Mexican army engaged in a battle with occupying French forces in the providence of Puebla in which they were outnumbered.  However, against overwhelming odds, they won the battle.  The victory helped the Mexican Army to gain confidence and to the citizens of Mexico, a sense of pride. To this day in the state of Puebla Mexico, the Battle of Puebla is commemorated with a celebration involving food, dancing, music, and drinking.
